Chilstone head gardener Jason has constructed a whole village of Beetle Loggeries in the woods at Chilstone's Langton Green Showgardens (see above) Dead wood is what a stag beetle craves and it is the tendency to tidy up gardens and woodland that has led to the decline of stag beetle numbers since the 1940s. This magnificent insect is a protected species under schedule 5 of the wildlife and countryside act of 1981. It is threatened globally with a surprisingly high representation in London and the south East UK.
